If you keep shifting position, wake up too warm or struggle to get comfortable, check how your mattress fits your needs and how it is being used. The problem could be the firmness, the base underneath or everyday care. Before buying a replacement, work through these common mattress mistakes and the practical changes that can help.
Confusing firmness with support
A hard surface does not automatically provide the right support. Firmness describes how a mattress feels when you lie down; support concerns how well it carries your body without uncomfortable sinking or pressure.
Side sleepers often need enough cushioning for their shoulders and hips. If you sleep on your front, check that your pelvis does not sink uncomfortably. Your build matters too: a mattress that feels forgiving to one person may feel much harder to another.
Choose a surface that lets you settle comfortably and change position easily. Avoid choosing the hardest option simply because your back aches. Harvard Health’s mattress guidance explains that both very hard surfaces and excessive sinking can be problematic.
Buying before checking how the mattress actually feels
Pressing a mattress with your hand or sitting on its edge tells you little about lying on it all night. Where testing is available, lie in your usual sleeping positions and turn over several times. Notice whether your shoulder feels compressed, your hips dip or moving takes effort.
When ordering online, ask about firmness, fillings and suitability for your existing base. A product name or deep profile cannot answer those questions on its own. If the description leaves something unclear, ask before ordering.
Write down what bothers you about your current mattress. “I feel stuck when turning” is a more useful buying criterion than “I want something luxurious”.
Leaving a worn or unsuitable base underneath
A new mattress can disappoint when the structure beneath it is uneven. Check for cracked slats, loose fittings, a dipping platform and centre supports that are missing or incorrectly fitted. Make sure the frame is assembled according to its instructions.
Ask the mattress supplier which bases are suitable and whether there is a maximum permitted gap between slats. There is no single spacing rule to apply to every mattress.
Base construction also changes the overall feel. AQ Beds’ guide to what makes a divan bed comfortable explains how rigid and sprung bases respond differently. Check this combination before deciding the mattress itself is wrong.
Choosing a size that leaves too little sleeping space
A mattress can fit the bedroom yet leave you cramped at night. If you share, both people should have room to turn without continually disturbing each other. Taller sleepers should check the length rather than concentrating only on width.
For reference, the Memory Pocket 2000 Mattress lists approximate dimensions of 135 × 190 cm for a double, 150 × 200 cm for a king and 180 × 200 cm for a super king. A king therefore adds length as well as width over a double.
Measure the frame’s internal dimensions before ordering. If upgrading the whole bed, also check room clearance and delivery access. Extra sleeping space is useful only if the new setup fits properly.

Trapping heat with the bedding above it
Before blaming the mattress for overheating, inspect everything between you and its surface. A thick topper, heavily padded protector and warm duvet can make an otherwise comfortable bed feel too hot.
Try a lighter duvet or remove an unnecessary layer, changing one thing at a time. Keep a suitable protector in place, but check whether its material and padding suit your temperature preferences. Review the bedroom heating too.
The NHS lists an overly hot or cold room among common causes of insomnia. A mattress marketed for cooling still needs appropriate bedding and a comfortable room temperature; its name alone cannot guarantee a cool night.
Guessing at rotation and cleaning instructions
Check the care label before moving your mattress. Rotating means swapping the head and foot ends; flipping means turning it over. Only flip a mattress designed for use on both sides, and follow its own rotation schedule rather than a generic online timetable.
Use a washable protector that fits without bunching. Follow the approved cleaning method, avoid soaking the fillings and let any damp area dry completely before remaking the bed. Remove a zipped cover only if the instructions say it is removable for cleaning.
If dust mites trigger your allergies, NHS advice on allergic rhinitis includes regularly washing bedding at 60°C or above. Choose washable bedding suitable for that temperature; this advice does not mean washing the mattress itself.
Using a topper to postpone dealing with sagging
A topper can adjust surface cushioning, but it cannot rebuild a mattress or base that has lost structural support. Adding more padding over a persistent hollow may leave you sinking into the same uncomfortable position.
Strip the bed and inspect the mattress and base separately. Look for an uneven sleeping surface, damaged components or a pronounced dip that remains when nobody is lying down. Photograph anything concerning and ask the supplier to assess it, especially if the mattress is relatively new.
Consider a topper when the underlying mattress is level and supportive but its surface feels too firm. If the problem is structural, address that first.
FAQs
Can my pillow make a comfortable mattress feel wrong?
Yes. A pillow that holds your head too high or too low can leave your neck uncomfortable. Check your head and neck position alongside mattress comfort, following The Sleep Charity’s guidance on pillows.
Does a higher spring count guarantee better comfort?
No. A number alone cannot tell you how a mattress will feel. Ask about the complete construction, firmness and comfort layers, and judge whether these match your needs.
Can I sleep on a new mattress straight away?
Follow the instructions supplied with that model. Some mattresses need time after unpacking before use. Ask the supplier if the instructions do not specify when yours is ready.
What if I order a mattress and find it uncomfortable?
Contact the retailer promptly. AQ Beds’ returns policy allows requests within 28 days of delivery, subject to condition requirements and applicable costs. Read the full terms before ordering.
Should I replace my mattress if I wake with back pain?
Check its condition, but do not assume it is the cause. NHS back pain guidance advises seeing a GP if pain persists for a few weeks, affects everyday activities or is worse at night.
